On day 44 of the 2022 LCK Summer split, Gen.G defeated kt Rolster 2-1 in their last regular split match. With their victory, they finish first place in the regular split standings, and are scheduled to face one of the winners of round 1 playoffs matches.
The following is a post-match interview with the head coach for Gen.G, Go “Score” Dong-bin.
Thoughts on the victory tonight over KT?
It felt like we had a long road ahead of me in the beginning of the Summer split, but I’m glad we finished first place at the end of that road.
Gen.G had a 11-match win streak this split, and finished with +30 points in the regular split.
We didn’t really think too much about any milestones like that; it feels like such records just came with the players’ great performances throughout the split. I think the players and the coaching staff should feel very proud of such achievements later on. They might not realize it now, but I feel that we’ll all feel proud later on.
If you had to choose a player that performed the best this split, who would it be?
My answer to this question will probably be boring; because every one of our players played much better than the Spring split, I really can’t choose a single player.
Then, who do you think improved the most since the Spring split?
Because everyone was on different teams prior to joining this year’s roster, everyone worked incredibly hard to become a unit. That’s why it’s also hard to answer this question, because we became a much stronger unit.
How did you feel when Lehends decided to play Soraka in game 3?
I think he misheard things because he was nervous… We told him that both Nautilus and Soraka’s okay, because Soraka has her strengths as well. In the end, we left it up to Lehends’ choice.
Peanut stated in another interview that he went through different training methods this split.
Yes. After we finished runner up in the Spring split, an important thing we realized was that practicing just as we did in the Spring wasn't enough. Everyone’s mindset changed, and that aspect changed the practice atmosphere. This led to a lot of our practice methods changing.
Gen.G showcased three different styles of team compositions in this series.
We were on the blue side in game 1, so things just went the way as we predicted. In terms of game 2 and 3, we had to recalibrate on the fly due to how things pan out in the match itself, and since we practiced a lot of different team compositions, we simply adapted.
Which team does the team want to face in the playoffs?
We did lose to KT once during the regular split, but since Bo5s are vastly different from the regular split, our choice will depend on how the other teams perform then. The viewing experience will be more enjoyable if this remains a mystery at this time, so only time will tell.
Lastly, is there anything you’d like to say?
The regular split of the 2022 LCK Summer split is over. Thank you so much for the immense support, and we’ll make sure to prepare well to make the fans happy.
