On Jan. 15th, day 3 of the 2021 LCK Spring split took place. Gen.G managed to take down Fredit BRION with a set score of 2-0, which placed them first in the standings. DWG KIA were the winners of the much anticipated match between them and T1, as the 2nd match of the day. While the series was very close until the end, DK were able to come out on top with their stronger top side of the map.
It was smooth sailing for Gen.G in game 1, as they had control over most of the game. The mid laner for GEN, Gwak “Bdd” Bo-seong, roamed to get first blood in the top lane after he successfully finished his laning phase. Kim “Rascal” Gwang-hee, also did not struggle in a disadvantageous matchup against Quinn, thus being able to overpressure their enemies at all lanes. If Rascal was in charge of managing side lanes as a well-fed, tanky Renekton, Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk’s Kaisa was on clean-up duty.
The same momentum continued on in game 2 as well, but the carries have changed for this game. If Bdd was the one only helping out his lanes through flawless control over his lane opponent, he himself became the carry for the team. While Rascal did get solo killed in the top lane, the impact of the lane death had miniscule impact on GEN’s momentum. Through objective control, GEN was able to close out the game for a 2-0 victory.
T1 vs DK was the second match of the evening. T1’s legendary mid laner, Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok started for the team to bring change into their strengths. Those strengths came from T1’s teamfighting, as Lee “Gumayusi” Min-hyung scored the first pentakill of the season in a teamfight by the dragon pit. The objective fights that followed were equally explosive, so T1 took game one to lead the series 1-0.
However, DK did not go down helplessly. When they had total control of their top side, the game turned very one-sided. Kim “Khan” Dong-ha’s Gangplank lane kingdom’d his lane opponent, Gnar, and with Heo “ShowMaker” Su stealing Baron as Zoe, they proceeded to destroy T1’s Nexus and tied up the series 1-1.
‘Who can carry harder, ft. ShowMaker’s Zoe and Gumayusi’s Samira?’ was what game 3 was all about. It was a clash of both team’s win conditions that they’ve showcased throughout the series. DK kept racking up dragon stacks through lane priority, while Gumayusi’s Samira was scaling to the point where she was out of control.
In the end, through area control near objectives, DK were the ones that came out on top. The poke from Zoe proved to be the key component in destroying the layers of shields that T1 put up. DK’s side lane control allowed them to get all the objectives, eventually coming out victorious in the end.
