On August 14, in the 2021 League of Legends Champions Korea Summer Split, DWG KIA swept Liiv SANDBOX and Afreeca Freecs defeated kt Rolster 2-1. With the win, DWG KIA secured a spot straight to the semifinals, and locked in a spot at the 2021 LoL World Championship.
DWG KIA shut out Liiv SANDBOX 2-0. Liiv SANDBOX was strong, but DWG KIA took more benefits while countering them. Although DWG KIA had a bad start in game 1, they countered Liiv SANDBOX well and solidified their lead whenever they had a chance. DWG KIA calmly struck back at Liiv SANDBOX to turn the game around. At the second Baron, DWG KIA used Ryze's ult to burst Baron. Liiv SANDBOX hurried to stop them, but it only ended up in a big teamfight win for DWG KIA.
Game 2 belonged to DWG KIA jungler Kim "Canyon" Geon-bu. As he collected kills and scaled in the early game, everything went his way. With the Diana-Yasuo wombo-combo, DWG KIA dominated the teamfights. Through the win, DWG KIA secured at least 2nd place in the regular season and a ticket to Worlds 2021.
Afreeca Freecs tripped as they lost game 1 against kt Rolster. There was a chance for Afreeca Freecs to rise up to 4th place if they had won 2-0, but it didn’t work out for them as they lost the first game. Fortunately for them, they won the game 2-1, but it seemed that they needed better concentration to do well in the playoffs to come.
On the other end, kt Rolster kept showing good performances even after their hopes for the playoffs perished. Choi “Doran” Hyeon-joon and Kim “Dove” Jae-yeon’s performance was always the basis of kt Rolster’s good performance. Although they lost the last match of the season, they showed hope for next year.
