This League of Legends European Championship (LEC) Spring Split will be one to enter history books. Played mostly in the LEC Studios in Berlin, Germany, the competition saw a change of pace with the current COVID-19 global pandemic. In order to protect its players and staff members, Riot Games decided to move the league to an online format, raising questions about how that would affect the series.
The LEC was set to hold its finals in Budapest, Hungary, but instead, the games were played online in the G2 Esports and Fnatic offices. A common subject among players was how strange it felt to play without a live audience cheering for them, as this year, fans showed support from their homes.
Being the oldest rivalry in the league, G2 Esports and Fnatic brought in an audience of 807,333 concurrent viewers all across the globe. The match was highly anticipated by LoL Esports fans, being the third time the two European top teams have clashed in finals. G2 Esports was crowned kings of the 2020 Spring Split, defeating their opponent 3-0, taking their seventh LEC trophy home.
Here are some backstage facts about this weekend’s historic finals:
- Average Minute Audience (AMA) of Playoffs: 279,361, increase of 13.74% YoY
- Hours Watched of Playoffs: 10,662,283, which is 71.35% higher than the previous 2020 record
- AMA of Finals: 694,266, also a new record for 2020
- Last year, League of Legends hit record viewership worldwide with the World Championship Finals in Paris reaching 44 million peak concurrent viewers
With both Fnatic and G2 Esports conquering seven titles each, the Summer Split holds enormous potential for fierce competition between the best in the West.
