The Legends of Runeterra board explained

So you’ve launched Riot Games' new title, Legends of Runeterra. Perhaps you come from a card game background, and have played other digital card games like Hearthstone, Magic: The Gathering Arena, or Shadowverse before. Or maybe you’re completely new to the genre and this is your first adventure in the world of collectible card games. Regardless whether you’re a veteran of not, there are a lot of elements on the Legends of Runeterra board to learn.

On the image below, we’ve marked all the spots of importance on the Legends of Runeterra board. Don’t worry, it may seem like much, but you’ll get used to all of them after playing a few games. Below the image are descriptions of the features we’ve marked.

1. Your hand. All the cards you draw will be added here. If you hover over your hand, the cards pop up to become fully visible. You can have up to 10 cards in your hand—any card drawn additionally will burn to a crisp, and cannot be recovered for the duration of the game.

2. The bench. When you play a unit (a champion, or a follower card) in Legends of Runeterra, they don’t enter the battlefield immediately. They land on the bench, awaiting further instructions. You can have up to six units on the bench.

3. The battlefield. This is where combat takes place. If you’re the attacker this round, you can line up your attackers by dragging units from the bench onto the battlefield. If you’re on the defense, you’ll have to wait until your opponent lines up their attackers. Then you can choose which units on your bench can block the attacking enemies. Like with the bench, you can have up to six units on the battlefield.

4. Your deck. You draw cards from this pile. You can hover over your deck to see which champion cards are still in there. You can do the same with your opponent’s deck (displayed on the top right of the image), though it will only tell you which champions were in their deck from the start. It won’t tell you which champions have been drawn or played by the opponent already.

5. Turn timer. Unfortunately for you, and fortunately for your opponent, you cannot take an hour to take a turn in Legends of Runeterra. The turn timer indicates how much time you have left to complete an action, and turns red when you really have to hurry up. If you run out of time, no action is completed, and your opponent gets the opportunity to perform an action.

6. The turn button. Actions in Legends of Runeterra continuously go back and forth. Click on the turn button when you’re done with whatever you wanted to do this turn, and pass the baton to your opponent. They then get to react with a play of their own, before passing the turn back to you.

7. Mana counter. Shows how much mana you (and your opponent, on their side) have left to spend, both regular and spell mana. To learn more about Legends of Runeterra’s mana system, read our guide.

8. Attack token. Each round, players swap from the defensive and offensive role. Whoever has the attack token can line up their units on the battlefield first, challenging the opponent to place their units in the attacker’s way to block incoming damage.

9. Your opponent’s hand. Unsurprisingly, you can’t see which cards your opponents have. There is one exception however: when an enemy unit is Recalled, they will return to the opponent’s hand faced upwards, allowing you to track that card.

10. Match history. Every turn in Legends of Runeterra is logged in the match history. Hover over it, and you’ll be presented with everything that happened in the match so far. You can scroll all the way to the top, back to turn one.

11. The Oracle Eye. Unsure what the result will be if you let all the spells and combat actions play out as they are currently lined up? Just hover over The Eye. It will show you what the board will look like if no changes are made to the actions queued.

12. The Nexus. Shows the remaining health points of you (the bottom, blue Nexus) and your opponent (the top, red Nexus). The player whose Nexus reaches zero health first, loses.

13. The opponent. Shows which regions are represented in your opponent’s deck, allowing you to consider which cards to account for during the match. If your opponent is spamming emotes, click on the x-mouthed emoji, and enjoy the emote-less peace.
