Everywhere you go, you can’t escape Epic Games' groundbreaking title, Fortnite. At the mall, in movie theaters, out to dinner with friends, even on jumbotrons at sporting events, you see dozens of kids showcasing dance moves featured in the game itself. Heads are no longer tilted in wonder when it’s talked about. Instead, those who have never heard of it are increasingly becoming rarer and rarer beings as pop culture thrusts the title in their faces, like a new parent who wants to showcase 2.5 x 3.5-inch photos of their children in their wallet at any given time. The game amassed billions of dollars in 2018 and created multi-million dollar celebrities from players who enjoy streaming the title on Twitch or competing in large tournaments around the globe. This isn’t the story of one of those millionaires who live in a house that features a dining room larger than any place of residence they grew up in or someone who showcases their newest Tesla vehicle they purchased for six-figures on social media or even has two computers to power their Twitch stream. In fact, on stream, you can see a microwave in the background, a stack of dirty dishes sitting on the counter and individuals throughout the day walking in and out of their modern trailer home.

“Game balance doesn’t have to be drama, right? It’s not a scandal, it’s just something that the community is at odds with the god developer [about],” Slasher said. “That type of issue I’ve always felt strongly should be out in the public, and developers do put pressure on players to not [speak publicly].

Jake “SolidJake” Kulinski’s involvement in the Heroes of the Storm scene pre-dates the release of the full game being available to the general public. Between masterminding what is arguably the most popular Heroes’ podcast, TownHall Heroes, to casting the amateur Open Division scene and launching a community funded tournament with a $10,000 prize pool, Bloodlust, SolidJake has seen and done it all. While the list of accolades continues further in Blizzard games and the fighting game community (FGC), SolidJake has accomplished all that he has despite failing to look out for ‘numero uno’...himself. As long as his wife and her family’s business is taken care of, as long as the Blizzard community is taken care of, as long as the players and talent around him are taken care of, Jake is fine operating at a loss and putting himself at risk. The consummate ‘fall guy’ as it were. That’s not to say he hasn’t had opportunities to put himself first and selfishly look to further his career in the entertainment business; it has to be on his terms after everyone else around him is first taken care of.

This will be Cdew’s fifth BlizzCon appearance and, if he wins, first BlizzCon championship. Time and time again, he has grasped victory and then watched it slip through his fingertips. Most recently, in 2016, he made it to the Grand Finals only to lose to Splyce in a nail-biter, 7-map series on World of Warcraft’s biggest stage.
