On the 5th of June (KST), Gen.G Esports defeated DAMWON Gaming 2:1 in the 2019 LCK Summer Split Day 1.
Gen.G was defeated twice against DAMWON last split, but this time they managed to put on quite a competitive match starting from game 2. For Gen.G it all went down to whether their main carry, Ruler can successfully scale up to the mid to late game. In the last set, Ruler again proved that he is capable of carrying the late game teamfights if he receives the right amount of support from his team. With Ruler delivering exceptional performance, Gen.G managed to close down this series and secured their first win for this Summer.
A lot of quality players have joined the Gen.G roster.
The new players are very bright and we are currently in a positive atmosphere. It's very fun.
The competition for the starting mid laner in Gen.G is quite fierce. Do you think the three mid laners in the team are improving?
I think they're putting in more effort... wouldn't they improve as well? It's a positive competition.
A lot of fans said that Gen.G might need a change in their playstyle. How did you prepare for this Summer?
While preparing for this split, I did hit quite a big slump and it was tough to overcome. However, I didn't feel that concerned [regarding our playstyle] because it wouldn't matter if we simply perform well.
What are your thoughts on the team's bottom lane focused playstyle?
I thought that the opponent was clearly trying to focus on playing around the top lane this series. That's why we focused on playing near the bottom lane.
A lot of meta picks appeared this series. How was it like facing those champions?
To be honest, I did feel a bit stressed. I had a lot to consider going against those champs. However, we overcame by banning those picks and it turned out to be okay.
Now you'll face Kingzone next. It will be a matchup against the bottom laners who has the "ending" nickname. (Notes: "Deft ending" and the "Ruler ending" are famous terms used in the KR community for their exceptional performance in the late game. )
I personally think that Deft is a great bottom laner. As long as our bottom duo can perform well, we have a good chance of winning.
