Riot Games announced their plans for the Rift Rivals: LCK/LPL/LMS/VCS, an international event in which the top teams from the four regions will clash head-on for the pride of their region.
2019 Rift Rivals: LCK/LPL/LMS/VCS will take place in Seoul on July 4th to July 7th. The group stage of the event will take place on the 4th and 5th at 4 PM (KST). The semifinals and the Finals of the event will take place on the 6th and 7th at 5 PM.
Unlike last year's 'Rift Rivals: Red', where LCK, LPL, and LMS competed against one another, this year's iteration of 'Rift Rivals: Red' will have a fourth region competing, the VCS. For the past two years, Vietnam's LoL league, VCS, has been showing consistent performance at international events, and their aggressive yet unique playstyle had left a deep impression on fans worldwide at the 2019 MSI. The VCS and the LMS will compete at the Rift Rivals as allies - both regions will send their top 2 teams to Korea in July.
The following are the 12 teams that will compete at the upcoming Rift Rivals: LCK, LPL, LMS, VCS:
LCK - SKT T1(SKT), Griffin(GRF), Kingzone DragonX(KZ), SANDBOX Gaming(SBG)
LPL - Invictus Gaming(IG), JD Gaming(JD), FunPlus Phoenix(FPX), Topsports Gaming(TES)
LMS - Flash Wolves(FW), MAD Team(MAD)
VCS - Phong Vu Buffalo(PVB), EVOS Esports(EVS)
The group stage of the event will be played in the Bo1 format. The opponents for the teams during the group stage will be decided depending on their Spring Split results. For example, SKT who had finished LCK Spring in 1st place will play against LPL Spring's 1st place team, IG, and LMS & VCS alliance's 1st seed team, FW. The region with the best result from the group stage will head straight to the Finals. The other two regions will have to clash in the semifinals to win their ticket for the Finals.
The semifinals and Finals will be played in the Bo5 format, and similar to last year, the order in which the teams will play will be chosen strategically by each region's teams' coaching staff.
