Washington, D.C. team hires Overwatch League's first female coach

Kyoung Ey Molly "AVALLA" Kim has made history as the Overwatch League's first female coach. The former Meta Bellum assistant coach will be joining head coach Hyeong-soek "WizardHyeong" Kim and recently announced analyst Mikael "mkL" Skjønhaug on the Washington, D.C. team's staff, where she will serve as an assistant coach.

AVALLA's history in Overwatch esports is a long one. She began as head coach of an Open Division team, Frescia Gaming, that rose through the ranks to finish top 16 and qualify for Contenders Trials Korea (Season 2). From there, she went on to work as an assistant coach for OpTic Academy (now GGEA Esports Academy) and Meta Bellum before signing with her first Overwatch League team.

▲ "I gave up law school to coach here," wrote AVALLA.

AVALLA will be joined in D.C. by her former co-worker, mkL, who was an analyst for OpTic Academy. He also worked alongside Last Night's Leftovers, the North American Contenders team formerly managed by D.C.'s current general manager, Kate Mitchell, during the team's playoff run.

"I'm happy to have AVALLA and mkL join the coaching staff. They bring international experience and a great work ethic. Together, we're well on our way to building the best coaching staff in the league," said WizardHyeong in an official statement.

Although there is currently no official start date for Season 2 of the Overwatch League, all teams must have a minimum of eight players signed by December 1st, 2018. For the Washington, D.C. expansion team, the signing of a robust, experienced coaching staff is the start of their long journey towards a competitive Overwatch League roster.
