“One beam, no matter how big, cannot support an entire house on its own. “
Although the players that perform on stage might be considered the biggest contributors to an esports organization’s success, as this famous Chinese proverb illustrates, a wide network of support is needed for any structure to stand.
As RNG gained the reputation for their remarkable performance in the LPL, there were some ‘unsung heroes’ that supported the team; one of them was RNG’s front. With the franchising concept being accepted in the LPL, the RNG front decided to make a new step for the team and build their own home stadium.
After having their own home turf, the team is now focusing on polishing their stadium content. Part of this upgrading involved signing an exclusive announcer for the team that could communicate with the fans and players.
During our visit to the stadium, we had the chance to meet RNG’s team announcer, WeiWei. Although she was rather new to the team, her broad experience in the Chinese LoL esports scene seemed to help her easily adapt.
Despite the fact that WeiWei was preparing for her stage interview, she still managed to spare her time to share some of her stories of working as an LPL announcer.
The following is the interview with RNG team announcer Weiwei “Vera”.
Can you introduce yourself to the fans?
Hello. My name is WeiWei. I use Vera as my English name. I’m currently the team announcer for RNG; I usually do interviews in the LPL. I majored in mass communication in college.
How did you start working with RNG?
After I graduated college, I went to a lot of interviews. In December of 2017, I applied for a LoL announcer test, and luckily, I passed my first interview. Then, I passed my second interview as well and went for my final interview in Shanghai.
I started my career in the LDL. While I was working as an announcer, I had to do my studies as well. When I was on the verge of graduating around June of 2018, I heard that the LPL was looking for an announcer. That’s when I went to Beijing to apply for an interview. I signed an exclusive contract with RNG there and that’s how I started to work in the RNG stadium.
How did you feel when you first started your work in RNG?
It was such a great experience for me. To work in the RNG stadium is like a special mission that I feel strongly responsible towards. A lot of fans love RNG, and the stadium’s services and facilities are magnificent. The fan culture there is so good; the first floor of the stadium is always packed with people. There are a lot of fans supporting RNG and that’s why I feel more responsible towards my job.
How much do you love playing LoL? Do you have any stories that you’d like to share that shows your affection towards LoL? Also, how long do you play usually?
When I first started playing games, I played with my friends; I just love to play games with a friend. Well, when I play LoL, I mostly go to the bottom lane. When I was a student, I went to a PC bang near my school a lot. I went to my lectures in the morning, and in the afternoon I played games until 11 PM before going back to my dormitory. I played games until I had dark circles under my eyes. Sometimes, I didn’t even care about eating. (laughs)
What is your LoL tier currently? And who is your favorite champion?
I didn’t play ranked queues this season. If I would rate my tier, personally I think that I’d be Silver or Gold. My favorite champion is Leona. I can land my Leona ultimate pretty well.
Which player do you like the most in RNG?
I’d pick Uzi. I often admire his professionalism; he is so serious in every game. He’s given happiness to us since season 3. He did go through some hard times, but he experienced glory as well. He just doesn’t seem to give up. It’s similar to the team’s name, ‘never give up’. His plays are so exceptional that sometimes I think that his presence is almost a religion in China.
Who is your favorite foreign player?
Faker. I don’t need to explain more about his remarkable plays and career. He is so humble with every match and opponent. I think his toughest opponent is himself since he always tries to get past his limits and improve. I think this is what we have to learn from Faker.
What is your personal goal in life? What do you want to accomplish as an announcer?
I don’t have a special goal or any specific standards for my improvement. It’s just about focusing on what I’m currently working on and improving day by day; I’d like to enhance my personal strengths. That’s how I can deliver more interesting interviews for the fans who visit the stadium. I’d like to offer some fun for every single fan that visits.
Do you have a role model?
I don’t have a specific person in mind. I’m simply learning from a lot of people. You know, people say, “When you’re with 3 people, there’s always a teacher in the group.” (A Chinese proverb)
Any last words for your fans?
I would like to thank each and every fan that has interest in me. I’ll see you guys in the stadium. Thank you so much!
