Red Bull has announced a Fortnite Battle Royale duo tournament to be played on the 99th floor of Chicago's Willis Tower on July 21st. The tournament will be start at 8:21pm and will continue throughout the night until 5:35am the next morning. The duo with the most points will win. (The complete rules can be found here.)
The event comes with the announcement that top Fortnite player Tyler "Ninja" Blevins has been signed to Red Bull for an endorsement deal. And soon after that annoucement, Ninja informed his watchers on stream and the event sold out:
Checking the sign-up page, it does appear that it is closed as they have met their maximum of 180 registered players. Of course, we'll still be able to spectate as the event will be livestreamed by Ninja on July 21st.
It will be worth tuning in to see, as the ruleset is unique from what you'd expect in an esports shooter. Players will have the opportunity to score bonus points if they manage to eliminate Ninja. Ninja himself is no stranger to this format, as he recently hosted "Ninja Vegas 18" where players were awarded a cash bounty if they managed to eliminate him.
Given that the Battle Royale format is still young on the esports scene and trying to find its own structure, its growth should be taken very seriously. Billionaire entrepreneur and esports investor Mark Cuban has suggested that Fortnite may overtake Overwatch. Such a statement is not completely unfounded, as Twitch viewership shows Fortnite at the #1 spot while Overwatch League viewership has been on the decline. At this point, Fortnite is even beating cable television shows.
However, it's important to note that Fortnite and other Battle Royale games have brought in new gamer demographics due to its unique gameplay genre and also due to cross-platforming. Even Red Bull's upcoming tournament is another example of a new format catering to a new audience. With that said, game developers are justified to see the newcomers as competition, but should also welcome the new crowds being drawn in, with potential to introduce them to even more.
