According to KBS, the Olympic Council of Asia(OCA) has sent specifics to National Olympic Committees(NOC) throughout Asia about which esports will be held in the Asian Games. The OCA has announced that LoL, Starcraft 2, Hearthstone, PES 2018, Arena of Valor and Clash Royale has been selected.
On April 2017, Alisports and the OCA made a partnership which eventually led to making esports a demonstration event in the Asian Games; this is the first time OCA actually announced details about which esports will be introduced in the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games.
Following the OCA’s announcement, on May 14th, Riot games specifically mentioned about the Asian Games. They stated that they are planning to give their best support to make esports qualify as a part of the Asian Games. Riot added that they want to make esports an event that can go alongside with traditional sports.
However, things are not going as planned for the Korean esports teams. Unfortunately, the Korean e-sports Association(KeSPA) has failed to meet the standards of becoming an affiliate of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee(KSOC). Since, KeSPA is not part of the KSOC, they do not have the rights to let the players participate in international tournaments. If Korea fails to make an official team before the OCA’s deadline, the country naturally loses their qualifications in the Asian Games.
