International Olympic Committee(IOC) has shared their thoughts about the possibility of eSports being included in the Olympics in the future.
On October 28th, IOC hinted that there is a possibility for eSports to be included in the Olympics in the IOC Olympics summit. According to a foreign press, the summit proposed that “the field of eSports is showing strong growth. Youth generation from all around the world shows passion for it. eSports provide the basis of the Olympic spirit” in a statement.
Furthermore, IOC agreed that “eSports can be considered a sporting activity, and the players prepare and train for the games with an intensity much comparable to athletes in traditional sports,” adding a further positive perspective regarding the topic.
On the other hand, there is still a notable apathy from a part of the community, arguing that in order for eSports to be considered an Olympics sport there has to be official recognition as well as rules and regulatory systems.
Meanwhile, Olympic Council of Asia has already declared that they will include eSports in the two upcoming Asian Games, taking place in Jakarta/Palembang, Indonesia in 2018 and in Hangzhou, China in 2022.
