Online gaming (also known as esports) used to be something people said would never catch on. How wrong they were!
Esports is now one of the biggest growth industries out there, and it’s getting bigger year-on-year. In 2017, the online gaming industry is forecast to be worth around $1 billion, (£800 million) and by 2020 it’s speculated that it will be worth at least 1.5 billion.
Why?
It’s changed the way people play. There are now teams playing each other in live-streamed games, eagerly watched by thousands upon thousands of fans. Big business has realised that there’s money to be made in online gaming, and they are willing to spend millions in sponsorship deals on the top teams and gamers.
There are tournaments being organized that have millions of dollars’ worth of prize money, and the world’s top individual gamers and teams will compete for it. The top teams and gamers have celebrity status among their fans, and games like DOTA 2, StarCraft and others have become famous in the esports community.
With such a fast-growing industry, there is a huge demand for people to fill support roles, so if you’ve ever wanted to pursue a career in esports, now is the time to do it.
If you’re good at designing, for instance, you could go for a job as gear and apparel marketing lead, with an average salary of $45,000 (£33,274)
Or how about being an event/product manager if you’re great at organising people and things? They oversee all competitions and gaming related events, and you need a minimum of 3 years’ experience in event management/production.
