In the past, beam projectors were primarily used in large conference rooms or classrooms, focusing solely on massive screen sizes. Today, however, things are very different. Thanks to remarkable technological advancements, projectors are now widely used in daily life, from home entertainment to outdoor settings. With shrinking household sizes and a greater emphasis on space efficiency, these products are even challenging the dominance of the living room's main display.
As the era of clearly defined gaming preferences fades due to the diversity of devices, platforms, and playstyles, the market is being reshaped by the emergence of gaming projectors specifically designed for high-end PC and console gamers.
The 'MoGo 4,' which recently gained significant popularity in Korea for its excellent price-to-performance ratio and ease of use, has a successor. XGIMI, the developer of that portable projector, has now unveiled a new product specifically targeting domestic gamers: the 'XGIMI HORIZON 20 MAX,' a next-generation flagship gaming projector that boasts every latest display-related certification.

What are the main highlights of the HORIZON 20 MAX?
The biggest strength of the HORIZON 20 MAX is its overwhelming image quality, delivered by the RGB triple laser light source and the X-Master Red Ring lens. The lens combines aerospace-grade laser glass to achieve both superior clarity and durability.
Furthermore, the X-Master RGB triple laser engine uses lasers manufactured by Nichia, the company that won an Academy Scientific and Technical Award in 2024 for its development of laser diodes for cinema projection systems.
5,700 ISO lumens is a figure so high that even as someone who has seen many high-end home projectors, I was stunned. Simply put, lumens measure screen brightness. While standard displays require some tuning, brightness is critical for projectors because the user is viewing light reflected off a surface.
The high-end gaming projector I personally used was around 2,500 lumens, so I had high expectations for a device with more than double that brightness. At this level, you can comfortably view the screen in broad daylight as long as you avoid direct sunlight, and in a darkened room, the clarity rivals that of a large-screen TV.

Additionally, Delta E
Physical performance is great, but the supporting features are also outstanding. The HORIZON 20 MAX is the world's first long-throw projector to feature 'AMD FreeSync,' which prevents screen tearing and stuttering during fast-paced action in racing, FPS, and action RPG games.
It also supports Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) for a smoother gaming experience. This technology optimizes signal paths and disables certain image processing features—such as dynamic contrast used for high-res movies—to focus on response speed, achieving as low as 1ms latency.
A Black Equalizer feature is also included, helping users easily identify objects or subjects in dark scenes. It also supports a virtual crosshair feature—common in dedicated FPS gaming monitors—with 15 different shapes, 4 color adjustments, and free positioning.
Beyond gaming, the image quality is top-tier. With IMAX Enhanced certification, you can enjoy premium streaming content with brighter, sharper, and more vivid images, while DTS:X immersive sound provides a cinema-grade experience.
Other certifications include Dolby Laboratories for higher contrast and vivid colors, HDR10+ for frame-by-frame brightness and contrast optimization, Filmmaker Mode for accurate color and contrast detail, and ISF certification for precise color reproduction that avoids distortion.

The Pillar of a Great Display: 'User Convenience'
Great screen, lots of features—all good, but for me, the best part was the ease of use.
Projectors are inherently sensitive. If the position changes slightly, or if you want to switch from PC gaming to console gaming, or go from watching YouTube to a movie in the dark, having to manually adjust the environment, focus, and screen size every time gets old very quickly.
It doesn't just connect to devices; it features a built-in CPU, acting as a fully functional smart display. With the Google TV platform, you can enjoy YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, Watcha, and more, just like on a smart TV or monitor.

A small but thoughtful detail: the power port is located at the bottom of the projector stand, allowing for great freedom in angle adjustment. Despite its powerful features, the integrated stand and 5kg weight make it easy to use in a typical home.
The biggest advantage of the HORIZON 20 MAX is that its advanced features are automated. When you turn it on, digital shift, digital zoom, and auto keystone correction ensure that even those without technical expertise get an optimal picture. I was also satisfied with the wall-color adaptation feature. Thanks to the 1.2–1.5:1 optical zoom lens, 4K lossless scaling is possible for screen sizes from 60 to 300 inches.
It also offers some short-throw capability. While there is no standard definition for ultra-short-throw, I found the optimal viewing distance for the HORIZON 20 MAX to be around 80cm. You can get closer, but for a perfectionist like me, it looked slightly blurry, so I settled on 80cm as the sweet spot, which provides a 20-inch screen.

Conclusion - Convenience GOAT! The ultimate projector
As I keep mentioning, the part I liked most among the numerous technologies and features of the XGIMI HORIZON 20 MAX is how well it handles "user convenience." The image quality is, without a doubt, the best I've ever experienced on a projector. Usually, such high-end products are difficult for average users, but with the HORIZON 20 MAX, I felt that just by turning it on, it automatically adjusted the screen to the wall and used the necessary features for the content.
The downside is the high physical price. If the competitor is a premium TV, the merits are clear when competing purely on price and performance. However, in an era where the TV as a home appliance still holds significant symbolic weight in Korea, it's hard to determine superiority right away, despite the unique strengths of projectors like space efficiency.
Another point: it's slightly disappointing that the refresh rate and response time are 240Hz/1ms at FHD and 60Hz/3ms at 4K. Of course, as a gamer, you can flexibly switch depending on the situation—4K for AAA games like Khazan or movies, and FHD for competitive games like PUBG or Aion 2—but as a premium product, I expected uniform refresh rates and response times. But then again, it would have been too expensive, right?
The XGIMI HORIZON 20 MAX is a premium projector that can be a very wise choice for people today who aren't considering high-end displays, especially TVs. If you add the sound output and spatiality of the built-in Harman/Kardon speakers, you can build a diverse content playback and viewing environment for both games and movies with a single device.
