In an event that came as a surprise to many fans and analysts, Cloud9 defeated Evil Geniuses 3-1 in the second round of the 2022 LCS Summer Playoffs. C9 advance to the Upper Bracket Final against 100 Thieves, while EG will have to compete against TSM in the Lower Bracket Quarterfinals.
In Game 1, C9 showed a very strong early game, and was quickly able to establish a lead. Robert "Blaber" Huang in particulary was smart in his jungle pathing, and secured several key neutral objectives for his team. Although C9 had a questionable draft in Game 2, Ibrahim "Fudge" Allami played an exceptionally strong game, and helped carry his team to the win.
C9 looked to sweep the series 3-0, but Game 3 saw EG take advantage of a superior late-game composition, which allowed them to take a game in the series. Game 4 was perhaps the closest game of the series, with both teams pulling ahead at various points throughout the game. However, Cloud9 managed to win in the end — winning the series 3-1.
Taking the entire year into consideration, the outcome of the match was unexpected. EG was seen as the overwhelming favorite — the favorite by many to win the title. They were the winners of the 2022 LCS Spring Split, and gained experience as a team at this year's MSI. Throughout the regular season in the summer, EG consistently maintained a ranking in first.
Meanwhile, the year has been quite problematic for C9. In addition to a disappointing spring campaign, they faced many difficulties throughout the summer and were only able to tie for fifth in the regular season standings. The team has the opportunity to win an LCS title — something the team has been unable to do since the 2021 Spring Split.
