Update 10/2/2021:
Owner of Team Envy Hastro responded to the situation on Friday, explaining that there was a lag in deciding details of the contract, but that Mikes was fully compensated for his work. He apologized for the operational dysfunction and promised to address the processes that failed.
Original Article: Envy's VALORANT coach Michael "Mikes" Hockom, who has led Envy's VALORANT team to the top of NA with their second-place finish at the VCT Berlin Major in September, has announced that he is leaving Envy after the organization allegedly failed to complete his contract and failed to communicate regarding the matter.
"After a 3 month period of waiting for a contract to be completed and a concerning lack of communication from the org on the matter, I will no longer be working with Envy going forward," Mikes said in a Tweet. "I appreciate the team taking a chance on me when others wouldn't. I'm very proud of how far they were able to come in the time we had and excited to see their future growth. Going forward, I am taking offers for coaching positions."
While Mikes wasn't able to attend the VCT Masters 3 Berlin Major in person, in his time with the team from June until October, he helped turn around their fortunes. Under his leadership, they qualified to their first international LAN, and managed to reach the Grand Finals of the second-ever international VALORANT major, defeating both Sentinels and 100 Thieves along the way.
But now it seems Envy will be attending Champions without the coach that got them there, due to what Mikes alleges to be a failure of Envy to secure his contract. Making matters worse for Envy, with Mikes on the market, they might end up having to face their former coach at Champions, depending on who signs Mikes next.
We have reached out to Team Envy for comment, we will update this article if we receive further details.
