Cloud9 has announced a series of changes to its League of Legends program ahead of the 2021 League of Legends Championship Series Summer Split. Calvin "K1ng" Truong will be promoted to starting LCS AD carry, which will see Jesper "Zven" Svenningsen moved down to C9 Academy. In addition, assistant coach Alfonso "mithy" Aguirre Rodríguez will be switching positions with head coach Kim "Reignover" Yeu-jin.
Cloud9 made the announcement in a tweeted video, which featured CEO Jack Etienne explaining that after nearly a year and a half with the organization, K1ng would be starting in the LCS. Etienne did not provide context on the reason for the swap of AD carries between Cloud9 and Cloud9 Academy, but assured that Zven would be working on his skills on C9 Academy in an effort re-capture his starting spot.
Etienne did give more context on the coaching change, stating that before the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational, Reignover had approached him to say the head coach position was taking a personal toll on his mental health. Due to passport restrictions, Reignover was unable to travel with C9 to Reykjavik, Iceland, leaving mithy to assume head coaching duties in his absence while Reignover helped the team remotely in an assistant coach capacity.
Reignover and mithy also appeared in the video, with Reignover saying that the setup during MSI 2021 was much better for him personally, and mithy stating that while he would be continuing in a head coach capacity officially, nothing would change majorly with the same four coaches on staff.
As the reigning LCS champion, Cloud9 represented North America at MSI 2021, but failed to clock a top 4 placing and missed the Knockout Stage entirely. The reasoning for K1ng's promotion over Zven has not been explained to the public at this time.
