On the 30th (KST), DAMWON Gaming took a massive win over DRX in the 2020 League of Legends Champions Korea Summer Split. DAMWON Gaming completely dominated their opponents in both the games played. Mid laner Heo “ShowMaker” Su had a splendid performance in the match, playing Zoe and Galio. After leading his team to victory, ShowMaker joined Inven Global for an interview.
How do you feel about today’s win?
I really wanted to win because we haven’t won against DRX yet. I really feel good that we did. Chovy was kind of my natural enemy, but I think I overcame it well. I feel awesome.
It could have been the most difficult game of the season. How did you prepare?
We tried to follow our draft plans well. We thought that we would have a better draft, and we did our best to play as anticipated.
Different from what many people expected, game 1 was completely one-sided. What broke the game open?
DRX had champions that were strong in the early-mid game, such as Heimerdinger or mid Camille. It seemed that they picked those champions to get through that period. But we spurted ahead in the early game, so it was convenient for our Aphelios to scale. When Sett and Zoe went ahead in the mid-jungle fight, I think we got much advantageous. We snowballed that well to gain many kills.
It would probably be very shocking if you lose that way. How is it as a player?
Obviously, if we were to lose that bad, it’s really difficult. But we’ve lost big several times after we were promoted into the LCK, so in a way, we’re used to it. We try hard to keep focused even if we do. It would be more important NOT to lose that way in the first place. I don’t think we’ve lost so big this season. If it came to that situation, it’s not a Bo1, so we would try hard to keep our mentalities clear.
Many fans say that you’re in the best form among the LCK mid laners. What do you think?
I’m not sure about that. But what I am sure is that I’m in the best form I’ve ever been in since I debuted as a pro. There isn’t any point in my career that I was as good as I am now.
DAMWON Gaming seemed to be very patient and calm during today’s game. Was there a reason?
In our last match against DRX, one of the reasons we lost was that we weren’t calm. We were too excited, so we tried to stay calm and cool-headed.
Did you see Yone? How do you think he’ll be?
Yone is a melee champion that’s very similar to Yasuo. Like him Yone is high-risk-high-return. It has a high champion ceiling and his E skill is important. How well you use his E would decide how good you are at Yone.
It would have been hard to predict mid Camille. How was it?
Last year, mid Camille was popular. I played her a lot and Chovy did as well, so I wasn’t much surprised. As much as I played her often, I knew how she’s played well. It wasn’t difficult at all playing against her.
Many people are already declaring that DAMWON Gaming will win the championship.
[Laughs] It’s way too early. It would be important to maintain our form without being careless as long as we can.
Zoe is quite meta. What’s her biggest strength?
Zoe is really good in skirmishes and objective fights. One of her biggest weaknesses is that she’s not as good in the late game, but the games aren’t as long and are very fast-paced, so it’s not that big of an issue.
Nuguri said that he will win Worlds this year. What about you?
I don’t think winning Worlds would be a season goal. It’s the ultimate goal of my pro gaming career. Winning Worlds is any LoL pro gamer’s goal. What my goal is to go straight to Worlds without playing regional qualifiers by winning the summer championship. I’ve been to the regional qualifiers last year. It’s really tense; it’s a scary series.
Have you seen K-Pop star, Sunmi, wear your jersey? How did you feel?
[Laughs] I felt really good and flattered. I’m her fan as well.
Lastly, a word to the fans?
We have a decent win score, so I’d like to get in 1st place as soon as possible. I’ll work hard without being careless so that we can win all the remaining matches 2-0.
