Dota 2's The International 2020 prize pool passes $30M, on course to set new records

Dota 2's crown event, The International, is on course to break another prize pool record. On Monday, the pot for The International 2020 (TI10) surpassed $30M and is now just about $4M shy of beating the biggest prize pool in esports history — TI9's $34.3M. TI10 beat the threshold in just over 60 days, good two weeks faster compared to TI9's pace.

The main engine behind The International's prize pool growth is the TI Battle Pass — a bundle of achievements, rewards, features, and hero skins. 25 percent of Battle Pass sales go to increasing the prize pool of TI, creating a lucrative crowdfunding option for Dota 2 fans: purchase cool stuff and support the most important tournament of the year. And from day 1 of this year's campaign, TI has been staying ahead of all its predecessors, at one point being $8M ahead of TI9.

There's no firm end date for the Battle Pass sale period, but TI8's and TI9's campaigns ran for over 110 days. In fact, since 2015, the TI Battle Pass has been on sale for at least 100 days, meaning there's potentially at least 40 more to go into the TI10 campaign — maybe more. With the current temp of prize pool growth, it'd be a major upset of TI10 falls short of its predecessor, prize pool-wise.

As for the tournament itself, there's still no information when and how it will be held. The global COVID-19 pandemic has put many wrenches in the wheels of the Dota 2 Pro Circuit, including the indefinite postponement of its crown event. Originally planned for August 18-23 in Stockholm, Sweden, TI10 no longer has a time period, though it's likely the event happens in 2021. With the majority of Major and Minor tournaments, made to hand out qualification points for The International, also being canceled, taken online, or changed, a different system for picking the teams will also have to come in effect.
