A recent video featuring Valve’s Portal in AR is drawing the attention of gamers everywhere.
In the video, the player shoots a Portal Gun and transports a Companion Cube through two portals, all within real-life environments. This was made possible by Microsoft’s AR HMD, the HoloLens.
The HoloLens scans the 3-dimensional surroundings of the user and transfers the information into AR. AR Portal utilizes this function and allows the player to open portals on walls and ceilings, or even make the Companion Cube go through different portals, just like in the video.
Unfortunately, Portal is a puzzle game and does not have great potential for becoming an AR game. But surely, AR Portal will work as a prime example of what AR games are going to look like.
The HoloLens is not planned for consumer sale until sufficient AR-related content is available, and no details have been revealed to the public yet.
Lastly, those portals don’t work on humans.
