Nexus Mods now requires every mod author to declare whether AI was used to make a new upload, but the modding site has ruled out an outright ban on AI-generated mods.
The changes were set out in a site news post on November 3rd signed by Victor, who posts as Foledinho. "We are pro-human creativity. That's the basic premise behind all decisions below," he wrote. A ban was rejected because AI is now used across the whole creative process, from script autocompletion to textures, voices and full assets, which makes a clear line hard to draw. "An outright ban will not eliminate AI from the modding process but will prevent people from mentioning its use," the post said.
Mods tagged as AI-assisted must also carry a public explanation of how and where AI was used, and AI tags will be shown more prominently on mod pages, right after adult-content tags. Players who want to avoid AI content will get content preference controls on game pages and the homepage, with search to follow. Nexus Mods also said it will not use mods to train AI, and will not sell or license them to anyone who does.
New permissions and a 60-day grace period
Nexus Mods is working on new permission options covering AI usage and training, as well as forks and derivative mods. They will default to 'Ask me', so permission has to be granted rather than assumed, and existing permissions won't be reset. Content that uses another author's work without permission will not be hosted on the site.
Existing mods have a 60-day grace period, running from November 3rd to January 2nd 2027, to meet the new rules. After that, authors will be asked to fix missing disclosures or permission settings, and those who don't can face warnings, account restrictions or removal. The company admitted that spotting AI content "is by no means an exact science" and will rely heavily on manual moderation and player reports.
Donation Points and security
According to the announcement, mods with the 'AI-Generated Content' tag received 2.13% of all Donation Points, the site's mod reward currency, so far this year. Nexus Mods called that "a comfortably low percentage" and is not changing reward rules for now. On security, it said 20,000 uploads were quarantined for extra checks over the last year, 12 times the year before, while 3,164 uploads between November 2025 and October 2026 were manually reviewed and cleared.
