Criteria for choosing a gaming laptop vary from person to person. Some prioritize performance above all else, while others value weight and battery life so they can carry it around daily. When you start factoring in screen size, display quality, storage, and keyboard, you eventually reach a point where you need to make reasonable compromises.
However, human desire works that way. You want top performance, a great display, and a satisfying keyboard. You want ample storage, and you don't want to compromise on graphics options in the latest games. As you add conditions one by one, you soon find yourself looking for something that excels in every area.
'HyperX OMEN MAX 16' is a product that answers such ambition starting right from its name. It houses an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus, a GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU with 16GB VRAM, a 240Hz OLED display, and an enhanced cooling system. As a result, its price exceeds approximately 6.5 million won. It is by no means an easily accessible product, but for those who refuse to compromise on performance, display quality, or user environment, it is a configuration well worth a look.

Flagship-Level Bulk and Build 'MAX' Size for 'MAX' Performance
Although the HyperX OMEN MAX 16 is a 16-inch laptop, it is by no means small or lightweight. It measures 356.5×269mm, with a thickness ranging from about 26.1mm at the front to about 28.7mm at the rear, and weighs approximately 2.97kg. Considering that the previously reviewed OMEN 16 weighed in the 2.4kg range, this is closer in class to a 17-inch gaming laptop.
In return, the extra space was actively used to accommodate high-performance components and cooling. The keyboard features a full-sized layout that includes a numeric keypad, and external connectivity ports are positioned along the left, right, and rear sides.
The port selection is also worthy of a flagship. It features two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports supporting 40Gbps transfer speeds and two 10Gbps USB-A ports, alongside HDMI 2.1, wired LAN, and a headphone/microphone combo jack. It also supports power delivery and external display connection via USB-C. If you felt slightly disappointed by the lack of high-speed USB-C ports on the previous OMEN 16, this model makes very few compromises in terms of expandability.
Matching its size, the power adapter is also substantial. The included power adapter provides a maximum output of 460W. While carrying it in a bag every day alongside the main body is burdensome, it clearly demonstrates the direction of this laptop considering the CPU and GPU configuration covered below.

RTX 5080 and Core Ultra 9 Combination Fundamental Muscle Fitting a Flagship Gaming Laptop
The CPU of the HyperX OMEN MAX 16, model 16-ah1054TX, is an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus. Featuring a 24-core, 24-thread configuration combining 8 P-cores and 16 E-cores, it operates at speeds up to 5.5GHz. It is also equipped with an Intel AI Boost NPU delivering 13 TOPS of performance.
The graphics card is a GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU. Equipped with 16GB of GDDR7 memory, its VRAM capacity has doubled compared to the 8GB found in the RTX 5070-based OMEN model examined earlier. Considering the laptop's character of actively leveraging high-resolution textures and ray tracing at 2560×1600 resolution, this is a welcome configuration.
The system memory consists of 32GB DDR5 using two 16GB modules, and the default storage is a 1TB NVMe SSD. The operating system comes pre-installed with Windows 11 Pro.

The Difference Delivered by 240Hz OLED 0.2ms Display and HyperAction Keyboard
The display also features a setup fitting for the name 'MAX'. The 16-inch OLED panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio supports a 2560×1600 resolution, up to a 240Hz refresh rate, and a 0.2ms response time. Color gamut coverage reaches 100% DCI-P3, with brightness reaching up to 500 nits for SDR and up to 1,100 nits for HDR content.
The previously reviewed OMEN 16 also supported a 2560×1600 resolution and 240Hz, but used an IPS panel. Looking purely at resolution and refresh rate, it appears identical to the prior OMEN 16, but looking at the screen in person tells a different story. Thanks to the deep blacks and high contrast ratio unique to OLED, the difference felt particularly pronounced in games with many dark scenes.
The keyboard features HyperAction technology. Supporting a 1,000Hz polling rate that checks key inputs 1,000 times per second, it features a full-sized layout complete with a numeric keypad and per-key RGB lighting. While it does not boast ultra-high figures like the 8,000Hz keyboard on the recently released VALORANT Edition, it provides a highly practical configuration suited for everything from general gaming to typing documents.

Cooling As Important As Performance OMEN Tempest Cooling Pro and Gaming Hub
Given that a Core Ultra 9 and RTX 5080 are crammed into a 16-inch chassis, cooling is another key aspect to watch in this product. The HyperX OMEN MAX 16 applies 'OMEN Tempest Cooling Pro' for this purpose. HP explains that internal space was expanded compared to previous models to facilitate airflow, utilizing a combination of a vapor chamber and heat pipes to exhaust heat from the CPU and GPU to the outside.
For thermal interface material, it uses 'OMEN Cryo Compound', which adds silicone to liquid metal to increase viscosity. On top of this, it supports 'Fan Cleaner', which rotates the fans in reverse to blow out internal dust. Fan Cleaner can be run directly or scheduled via OMEN Gaming Hub.

Another interesting feature is 'Fan Cleaner'. On the Intel-based HyperX OMEN MAX 16, it supports a self-cleaning feature that reverses the fan rotation after gaming sessions to blow out accumulated internal dust. It does not operate during gameplay, and can be run manually or scheduled within OMEN Gaming Hub.
The familiar OMEN Gaming Hub from previous OMEN products is also provided as is. You can check CPU and GPU status in real time and manage major settings such as performance, fans, and lighting in one place. If you want maximum performance, you can use Unleashed Mode, and HP states that the Intel-based OMEN MAX 16 lineup is designed to draw up to 300W of total platform power in this mode.
OMEN AI is also supported. This feature aims to analyze the game currently running alongside system status and adjust various settings to boost frame rates, focusing on reducing the hassle of tweaking detailed options one by one.

How Far Can the RTX 5080 Go? Testing Latest Games in 2.5K Environment
Benchmark scores alone cannot fully explain gaming performance. In this test, we played actual games based on the product's native resolution of 2560×1600 to verify frame rates and long-term performance consistency. Tests were conducted in 'Unleashed' mode within OMEN Gaming Hub.

Overall, even at 2560×1600 resolution, the raw power of the RTX 5080 was clearly evident. 'The Witcher 3' with ray tracing and Frame Generation enabled generally maintained 90 to 110 FPS, while 'Ace Combat 8', known for its heavy optimization burden, also averaged in the 90 FPS range. 'Crimson Desert' maintained around 100 FPS with ray tracing active, and 'Cyberpunk 2077' recorded an average of 82 FPS in the Ray Tracing Ultra preset benchmark. It was clear that users can enjoy the latest games at 2.5K resolution without making major compromises on graphic settings.
Worthy of the Name MAX HyperX OMEN MAX 16
The HyperX OMEN MAX 16 is a somewhat different product from gaming laptops seeking moderate compromise. Starting with the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and RTX 5080 16GB, it actively incorporates essential components needed to maximize performance, including a 240Hz OLED display, an upgraded cooling system, and a 460W power adapter. In return, fan noise when pushed to maximum performance is considerable. If you can accept this, it demonstrates performance capable of enjoying the latest high-spec games with almost no compromise on settings.
Of course, the trade-offs are equally clear. Weighing about 3kg for the laptop alone and requiring a massive power adapter, it is far from the portability typically expected of a 16-inch laptop. Its price, set around 6.5 million won, is also not easily accessible. Ultimately, the HyperX OMEN MAX 16 is a product suited for users who prioritize maximum possible gaming performance within a portable form factor over lightweight design or cost-to-performance ratio.
