On August 27, Nekki showcased a new trailer for 'SPINE,' a cyberpunk action game combining gunfights and close-quarters combat, at gamescom 2026's Future Games Show (FGS). The developer describes the title as "Gun Fu" action that merges firearms with kung fu, and is developing it as a single-player cinematic action game emphasizing cinematic presentation. In the revealed trailer, signboards featuring Korean text appeared in the background, drawing attention.
The setting is 'Tensor City,' a cyberpunk megacity built by an AI. Here, a Social Rating decides who eats, works, and gets thrown away, dividing the city between the gleaming 'New City' above and the rotting 'Old City' below. Players control 'Redline,' a rebellious street artist living in the slums. After losing everything, including her younger brother, to a mafia heist, Redline obtains 'Spine,' a sentient combat implant, and together they defy the AI regime to find her brother.
Combat is designed by blending freeflow gunfights with beat 'em up action. Actions flow seamlessly, allowing players to dodge point-blank shots, disarm enemies, and turn snatched guns back on opponents. Players can counter attacks with cinematic parries and make improvised responses using the surrounding space and enemy weapons. During battle, a dedicated camera anchored close to Redline is applied to create a cinematic presentation reminiscent of an action movie.
Enemies include Justice Department squads, mafia enforcers, VR zombies, and elite spinebearers known as the 'Children of Tensor,' who are designed to be near-invincible. In particular, boss fights against the Children of Tensor are designed to require distinct strategies for each opponent.
'SPINE' is scheduled to release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2027.
