The latest gameplay trailer for 'Gears of War: E-Day' was finally unveiled at the Xbox Game Showcase.
Unlike the previously released cinematic trailer, the video revealed at the start of the showcase features in-game footage. Spanning about seven minutes, the video is set before the events of the first game and begins with Marcus and Dominic—presumably still civilians—scrambling to find weapons amidst a sudden crisis. Once armed, they fight their way through Locust forces.
The trailer showcases iconic Gears of War mechanics, such as cover-based combat and the active reload system. It also highlights the heavy, visceral action fans expect from the series, including a scene where a character uses the Mark 1 Lancer—the early prototype of the 'Retro Lancer'—to perform a bayonet charge and impale a Locust.
The video builds to a climax as Marcus faces off against a Locust in one-on-one combat. After failing to deliver a fatal blow with his Mark 1 Lancer, Marcus is grabbed by the throat and pushed to the brink of death. As his consciousness fades, a new soldier arrives and saves him by shredding the Locust with a chainsaw. The sight of the broken Mark 1 Lancer alongside the chainsaw seems to foreshadow the birth of the 'Chainsaw Lancer,' the definitive symbol of the Gears of War series.
'Gears of War: E-Day' is scheduled for release on PC and Xbox Series X|S on October 7. Pre-orders are currently open, and those who pre-order will receive early access to the open beta starting August 6.
