Entertainment news outlet Variety reported on the 1st (local time) that the American film studio Lionsgate is producing a film based on Sega's 'Streets of Rage.' Lionsgate is known for producing or distributing films across various genres, including 'Saw,' 'The Hunger Games,' 'Twilight,' and 'John Wick.'
While specific plot details have not been disclosed, it was revealed that Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the key figures behind the success of the 'Sonic the Hedgehog' film series, have been tapped to write the screenplay. Derek Kolstad, an executive producer of the 'John Wick' series, has also joined the team, and Jeymes Samuel, director of 'The Harder They Fall,' has been selected to direct. Variety also reported that the production team includes Sega's Toru Nakahara and Shuji Utsumi; Story Kitchen's Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson; and Escape Artists' Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Tony Shaw, and Derek Kolstad. Pat Casey and Josh Miller will serve as executive producers, while James Myers and Pavan Kalindindi will oversee the project for Lionsgate.
Erin Westerman, president of production for the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, told Variety, "Our partners at Sega and we knew that 'Streets of Rage' needed a bold filmmaker. Jeymes Samuel’s visceral and explosive style, along with his unique way of using unforgettable music, is a perfect fit for both audiences familiar with the series and those new to it. We are incredibly excited to see how he brings his own memorable vision to this beloved video game IP."
'Streets of Rage' is a belt scroller action game developed by Sega for the Sega Genesis in 1991. It follows three detectives—Axel, Blaze, and Adam—as they work to dismantle a crime syndicate terrorizing their city and restore peace to the streets. At the time, it was highly acclaimed for bringing arcade-quality effects, graphics, and diverse action to a home console. After the third installment was released in 1994, the series went dormant until 2020, when Lizardcube licensed the IP to release a fourth game. The title also appeared in a 2023 teaser for a new project aimed at reviving classic IPs. This latest news of a film adaptation is expected to further bolster the resurgence of the 'Streets of Rage' IP.
