Arjan Brussee, co-founder of Guerrilla Games and former Chief Technology Officer at Epic Games, is making headlines with the news that he is developing a new game engine called 'The Immense Engine' as a freelancer.
It is not particularly rare for game companies to develop their own engines or general-purpose engines. In fact, Guerrilla Games, where he previously worked, also developed and used its own engine, the Decima Engine. Based on its outstanding performance, it was utilized in the development of Supermassive Games' 'Until Dawn' and Kojima Productions' 'Death Stranding' series. The same is true in Korea, where Pearl Abyss is currently developing 'Crimson Desert', 'Dokkaebi', and 'Plan 8' using the Black Desert Engine and its advanced Blackspace Engine. Amidst this, the reason the Eamonz Engine is particularly eye-catching lies in its development direction. According to the gaming media outlet VGC, Brussi explained the background of the engine's development in an interview with the Dutch podcast 'De Technoloog', stating, "Currently, there is no engine that is developed entirely in Europe, made by Europeans, and complies with European rules and guidelines." He added, "The Eamon's Engine will become a new European-style game engine that competes with American engines like Unreal Engine and Unity Engine." In effect, the goal is to develop a European-style engine that will serve as a third alternative to Unreal Engine and Unity Engine, which currently divide the influence of general-purpose engines in the game industry. As game engines are recently being utilized in various fields beyond the gaming industry, the Eamon's Engine also aims for broad versatility. He emphasized this broad versatility by mentioning that the engine could be used for 3D simulations in the defense and logistics sectors. In addition, there are plans to actively incorporate AI technology, which has recently emerged as a hot topic. Citing Unreal Engine as an example, Brucie explained, "To modify something, you often have to overhaul the entire engine," adding, "The advancement of AI will change the very way core software is developed." He further stated, "If AI agents understand how to utilize frameworks, they can perform the work of 10 to 15 people," and revealed that he is envisioning a game engine based on an AI agent architecture. However, there is considerable skepticism regarding whether the Emmons Engine unveiled by Brucie can actually reach the completion stage. The biggest reason is that he is currently a freelancer. Since a game engine is more than just a development tool—it is core software that integrates various functions necessary for game production—it requires a massive workforce and cost far exceeding that of typical game development. Furthermore, continuous management, including sales, technical support, and maintenance, is required even after the engine is developed. It is assessed that it is virtually impossible for even the most brilliant developer to handle all of this on an individual basis. Nevertheless, the reason industry interest continues is due to Brucie's background. He served for a long time as a co-founder of Guerrilla Games, the developer of the Decima engine, and later served as the Chief Technology Officer at Epic Games. Accordingly, the industry is focusing its attention on how he will continue the development of the Eamz engine going forward.
