The bizarre and dark survival game 'Don't Starve' has returned with a new title after a decade.
Klei Entertainment unveiled the new series entry, 'Don't Starve Elsewhere,' at the Triple-i Initiative Game Showcase on the 10th. This is the first official new installment in about 10 years, following the original game in 2013 and the multiplayer expansion 'Don't Starve Together' in 2016.
The most striking features in the reveal trailer are the jumping mechanics and terrain. The previously flat, top-down 2D terrain has been reimagined with multiple layers, allowing for more complex environments. This enables a wider variety of visual presentations within the same area. Notably, the trailer showcases a jumping mechanic, something that was previously only possible through mods.
Familiar characters such as Wilson, Willow, and Wendy are set to return, and the game will feature a wider variety of biomes across these new multi-layered regions. The description also highlights a new core mechanic: the fog system. The reveal identifies the fog as a major threat, describing it as a force that curses everything it touches. The video shows trees and grass transforming upon contact with the fog, suggesting it will further increase the series' signature challenging difficulty.
Returning with the series' unique art style and new systems, Don't Starve Elsewhere will support both single-player and online co-op. A specific release date was not announced at the event.
