'No Man's Sky,' which famously turned its initial poor reception around to become a success story, is rolling out another massive update. This one includes alien creature combat on a scale that will change the game's core loop.
On the 8th, Hello Games unveiled 'Xeno Arena,' the version 6.3 major update for 'No Man's Sky.' The core of this free update is 'Space Pokémon.' Players can now capture alien wildlife found across the universe, form teams, and battle other players. By expanding the existing creature system and implementing a turn-based battle system, the game now offers a gameplay experience reminiscent of Pokémon.
The battle system goes beyond mere imitation. Each creature possesses unique attributes and skills based on the environment and species of its home planet. With hundreds of combat skills available, players can engage in strategic battles, such as using fire-based creatures that are strong against ice but vulnerable to radiation.

The progression system has also been enhanced. By gaining experience to unlock genetic mutations, players can customize various factors like agility, health, and combat ability to raise their own unique creatures. When players obtain eggs, they can use the Egg Sequencer to perform genetic modifications, altering personality traits that affect combat behavior, as well as physical traits that influence durability and appearance. It functions like a breeding system, allowing players to create creatures with superior abilities.
Additionally, a ranked 'Arena League' has been implemented, allowing players to focus on this content, earn achievements, and unlock unique rewards. Players can also show off their feats with related titles.
Sean Murray, founder of Hello Games, which is approaching the 10th anniversary of its game's release, specifically mentioned titles like Pokémon, Palworld, and the pet battle system in World of Warcraft. While noting that 'we are surprised ourselves by how many major updates we managed to deliver in 2025,' he expressed a commitment to continued updates, adding that '2026 is carrying that momentum forward.'

'No Man's Sky,' which faced controversy at launch for failing to live up to its trailers, has spent the last decade providing consistent free updates. Through this, it has overcome its initial criticism and become a beloved steady seller.
This update is available for free across all platforms, including Windows, Mac, PS4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 1/2, and VR. Furthermore, the team continues to optimize the game for all devices, including a 15% boost in rendering performance for the Nintendo Switch 2 through various optimizations.
Meanwhile, in addition to updates for 'No Man's Sky,' Hello Games is currently developing 'Light No Fire,' a survival sandbox game set on a massive fantasy planet.
