Last Saturday, Cho “Maru” Seong-ju won the championship of 2022 GSL Season 3, defeating Shin "RagnaroK" Hee-beom in the finals. It was Maru’s second consecutive GSL finals appearance and eighth finals overall. Through the win, Maru collected his fifth GSL title.
In the finals match, Maru dominated RagnaroK and collected a 4-0 sweep. This was Maru’s fourth challenge at the finals after winning four GSL championships. By winning his fifth title, Maru reigned as the player with the most GSL titles.
Games 1 and 2 were played on Moondance and Inside and Out. They were quite fast, as Maru’s tactics proved effective from early. Game 3 on Waterfall was the highlight of the series, as Maru had to deal with RagnaroK’s early Ravager rush. After stopping the rush, Maru moved forward with the macro game and split the map. The two players traded some attacks, but as Maru’s Ghosts started to snipe RagnaroK’s elite units, the game was over.
The fourth and last game was on Cosmic Sapphire, which Maru benefitted through Banshees. RagnaroK responded with Mutalisks and Corruptors, but Maru’s Thors were the clear counter. As Maru moved in, the game was over, and the title went to Maru.
With the clean sweep, Maru collected his fifth GSL championship — a milestone that has never been reached by another player: G5L. About the victory, Maru said, “It took me long to win five championships. I’d like to thank my family and the fans who continued to cheer for me and trusted me. I won’t be satisfied with this win, and I’ll win five more GSL championships so that anyone would mention me when they talk about Starcraft 2 Terran players.”
