TSM announced that they will once again be making changes to their LCS roster. Support Wei "Shenyi" Zi-Jie and mid laner Ji "Takeover" Cha Hyeun-min will be promoted from TSM Academy to the LCS for week 5 of the Spring Split, respectively replacing Wang "Yursan" Sheng-Yu and Zhu "Keaiduo" Xiong.
TSM head coach Wong "Chawy" Xing Lei sat down with Upcomer's Nick Ray to provide more clarity on the situation, as well as the reasoning for Shenyi's initial benching:
According to Chawy, during Week 2, Shenyi locked in a champion on stage without communicating with the team or coaches. TSM coaching staff followed up with Shenyi to further discuss the matter, but his attitude was deemed “negative and disrespectful.”
Chawy further disclosed that the team has been working with Shenyi to help him improve as a teammate and get back to the LCS team as soon as possible. The initial plan was for him to return to the LCS within two weeks.
“This is the main reason why he was benched, not because of his gameplay,” said Chawy. “It was more of his attitude and respect toward the team and criticism we give him… I think this two weeks he has really shown a lot of improvement.”
For TSM to bench Keaiduo speaks volumes towards the need for something to change.
Last week, TSM jungler Mingyi "Spica" Lu said in an interview with Inven Global that his individual play had suffered due to his focus of bringing the inexperienced Keiaduo up to speed.
In addition, Spica mentioned that Chawy had almost exclusively focused on Keaiduo as opposed to a traditional approach to head coaching.
That being said, it's hard to blame the organization for trying something new after putting all their eggs in the Keaiduo basket. TSM currently sits in last place in the 2022 LCS Spring Split with a 1-8 record.
