One of the most popular video game franchises of all time is set to receive a Netflix film adaptation, according to an announcement on Tuesday afternoon.
Selling over 39 million units across their three existing titles (and a fourth in development), Netflix, 2K, and Take-Two Interactive are partnering to bring Big Daddy, Little Sisters, and a cast of characters within the BioShock universe to life.
In a statement, Take-Two Interactive's Chairman and CEO, Strauss Zelnick, said the following:
“Netflix is among the best and most forward-thinking storytellers in all of entertainment today. We are thrilled that they share our vision and commitment to the BioShock franchise, which is beloved by millions of fans around the world. 2K’s Cloud Chamber studio is deep in active development on the next iteration of the series, and coupled with our partnership with Netflix, we remain highly confident that BioShock will continue to captivate and engage audiences like never before.”
First released back in 2007 for the PC and Xbox 360 (later ported to the PS3), Bioshock's unique dystopian world resonated with gamers young and old to create an experience unlike any they have felt to date.
Back in 2008, Take-Two Interactive announced a deal with Universal Studios to create a BioShock movie and had Gore Verbinski (known for his work on The Ring and Pirates of the Caribbean franchise) signed on to direct. The project fell apart during production and was scrapped altogether years later.
Now it's Netflix turn to try and capture the magic that the video game franchise has bottled up for nearly 20 years.
