On November 21, 2021, Riot Games held a media event discussing the League of Legends World Championship in 2021, as well as the plans for the iteration of the event next year in 2022. Representatives of Riot Games confirmed that the LoL esports viewership peak of 2021 was 73.8 million; 60% higher than the previous peak exhibited by the competition.
The information was made public by Riot Games' President of Sports John Needham, who oversees the ecosystem and circuit of League of Legends esports as well as the global VALORANT Champions Tour. Needham also mentioned that the average minute-audience of Worlds 2021 was 30.6 million 33% higher than last year.
The information followed Riot Games' official confirmation of locations for Worlds 2022. Worlds 2022 will be held in North America as planned, with Mexico City hosting the group stage, New York, NY hosting the quarterfinals, Toronto hosting the semifinals, and San Francisco, CA hosting the finals of the event. This will be the first time that Mexico will host a League of Legends World Championship, and the first time San Francisco has hosted worlds since the Worlds 2016 group stage.
The 2021 League of Legends World Championship was originally supposed to be hosted in China after COVID-19 concerns canceled the countrywide China tour of Worlds 2020 and localized the event to Shanghai.
However, because of crew-related complications, Riot Games ended up hosting Worlds 2021 in Reykjavik, Iceland, the same location that hosted the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational, as a last-minute pivot.
The 2022 World Championship also marks the first event held in Canada since 2016. Toronto, who will be hosting the semifinals of Worlds 2022, also hosted the finals, semifinals, and third place match of the 2016 NA LCS Summer Playoffs, in which TSM defeated Cloud9 3-1 to secure their third domestic title in four splits.
