At a press conference held at San Francisco's Chase Center, Riot Games announced details for the North American Worlds 2022. The event will feature Play-Ins in Mexico City, Mexico; groups and quarterfinals in New York City; semifinals in Toronto, Canada; and finals in San Francisco, California. The event marks the first time Worlds has hosted a North American Worlds in multiple countries, featuring the first times the event has been hosted in Mexico and Canada
The venue lineup for the event is slated to be Play-Ins from LoL Esports’ Liga Latinoamerica
(LLA) competition arena, groups and quarterfinals at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, semifinals at the Scotiabank Arena, and finals at the Chase Center. It will be the 10th unique venue to host the Finals.
"The momentum behind League of Legends Esports has only continued to grow since the last
time we hosted Worlds in the U.S. in 2016. We're thrilled to bring the full scale of our global
sport back to North America, and, COVID permitting, welcome fans into the stands across three
countries and four different cities," said Naz Aletaha, Global Head of LoL Esports.
"Worlds is the showcase of the greatest of our sport, and we look forward to celebrating that
with our fans in North America and across the world."
The event is also seen as a boon to Latin American esports. "Latin America is a high potential growth market, where millions of esports fans have enjoyed both local and global events in recent years. We also have a solid ecosystem around esports, where sponsors, business partners, team owners, and players have built a self-sustaining and forward-looking sports scene," said Martin Blaquier, Riot's Head of Esports in Latin America. "Hosting the Play-In Stage will mark a milestone for the region; it will be a dream come true for our fans and will lay the foundations for the future of esports in Latin America."
During the question and answer section, Naz Aletaha confirmed that while there was no update to change the format for Worlds, Riot will be exploring options to do so. Because of the VISA logistics because of the choice to run the tournament in three countries, Riot explained that they will have a global mobility team to handle such concerns.
