UPDATED Nov. 30: Golden Guardians have retained all members of their coaching staff this off-season, but aside from Inero remaining in the head coach position, the LCS staff structure looks very different from last year's Golden Guardians, and frankly, different from any other LCS team. GG will have five assistant coaches for their LCS team, with one coach focusing on each position.
Brandon "Swip3rR" Holland, formerly a two-way player-coach for Golden Guardians, has swapped positions and will be working with Licorice in the 2022 season. Samuel "Spookz" Broadley was a two-way player-coach as well, and will now be focusing on working with GG's new jungler Pridestalker. Aaron "ChuChuz" has retained the assistant coach position from last season, but will now be focusing primarily on Ablazeolive.
Trevor "Stixxay" Hayes, who started in the AD carry position for Golden Guardians throughout 2021, will be one of GG's new assistant coaches and will be working primarily with new AD carry Lost. Stixxay made his LCS debut with Counter Logic Gaming from 2016 through 2020 before signing with GG in 2021. Morgan "Hustlin" Granberg, former support of Vitality.Bee, rounds out the assistant coaching staff and will be working primarily with Olleh.
UPDATE Nov. 29: After completing their LCS roster, Golden Guardians announced their roster for Golden Guardians Academy on November 29th.
Mid laner Tommy "Ryoma" Le, who competed for 100 Thieves last season at both the Academy and LCS levels, will be joining GG Academy for the 2022 season alongside top laner Zheng "Tony Top" Fen, who was acquired from Evil Geniuses Academy, and AD carry Vincent "Violet" Wong, who most recently competed with PEACE at the 2021 World Championship. Ethan "Iconic" Wilkinson, who played the entire 2021 season in the LCS for GG, has been named GG Academy's new jungler.
The roster is rounded by Chime in the support position. Chime was signed as the support for Golden Guardians Academy in the 2021, but made his LCS debut in the most recent Summer Split. However, because of GG's signings of jungler Pridestalker and support Olleh for the 2022 LCS roster, Chime and Iconic have both found themselves on GG Academy for the upcoming season.
Perhaps the most interesting signings for the roster are in the staff positions. After joining Golden Guardians as an associate analyst ahead of the 2021 LCS Summer Split, Jonathan "Jido" Do has joined GG Academy in the same position for 2022. The head coach of the team is Matthew "Akaadian" Higginbotham, who has been jungling in the LCS off and on for the past half-decade. Akaadian made a finals appearance in the 2019 LCS Spring Playoffs as the starting jungler of TSM.
UPDATE Nov. 17: Golden Guardians has confirmed the signing of Lost, which completes the team's LCS roster for the 2022 season.
Original story:
Golden Guardians are nearing completion of its 2022 LCS roster following its signing of European jungler Milo "Pridestalkr" Wehnes. A report by Dot Esports states that the final piece of the Golden Guardians roster puzzle is an acquisition of TSM AD carry Lawrence "Lost" Hui.
Golden Guardians began their off-season by retaining top laner Eric "Licorice" Ritchie and mid laner Nick "Ablazeolive" Abbott, the former of whom was acquired from FlyQuest in a mid-summer acquisition that resulted in GG qualifying for the post-season by the skin of their teeth.
GG then signed Kim "Olleh" Joo-sung to reprise his 2019 role as the team's starting support. Olleh spent most of the summer of 2019 playing for GG Academy, then joined Dignitas Academy for the first half of 2020. Olleh then returned to Golden Guardians in June 2020 to briefly serve as a two-way player coach for the LCS and Academy squads, but has been inactive since July 2020. Olleh will replace Jonathan "Chime" Pomponio, who played his first LCS split this summer.
Pridestalker has played well during his time in European Regional Leagues, but has not played in a major league since starting for FC Schalke 04 Esports in the 2018 EU LCS Spring Split. However, GG has a history of signing junglers out of minor regions — 100 Thieves jungler Can "Closer" Çelik was brought to North America on a contract with Golden Guardians.
While no confirmations have been made of Lost joining Golden Guardians, the past points towards a potential likelihood of the report becoming true. Lost, originally from Oceania, was scouted and signed to Echo Fox by head coach Nick "Inero" Smith, the current head coach of Golden Guardians. Inero may be looking to reunite with his former marksman after the highest-profile year of his career on TSM in 2021.
