The Overwatch development team announced outlaw McCree's new name. Starting on October 26th, McCree will henceforth be known as "Cole Cassidy." While Inven Global didn't guess the exact name, we got pretty close with some of our speculations in August, when Olivia said Jim Cassidy should be the name!
The Overwatch story canon now states that McCree was always his alias and that he will now take back his true name Col Cassidy as we head into Overwatch 2 next year.
"The first thing a renegade loses is their name, and this one gave up his a long time ago," the Overwatch team wrote in their announcement. "Running from his past meant running from himself, and each passing year only widened the divide between who he had been and who he had become. . . To make this new Overwatch better - to make things right -he had to be honest with his team and himself. The cowboy he was rode into the sunset, and Cole Cassidy faced the world at Dawn."
The new name change comes after Jesse McCree, the name sake for Overwatch's most infamous outlaw, exited Activision Blizzard after being named in the California lawsuit against the company for gender discrimination and sexual harassment. McCree was one of the many developers pictured in the now infamous Cosby-suite at Blizzcon, a place where Blizzard employees allegedly gathered to drink and harass women, named after formerly convicted rapist Bill Cosby.
Blizzard has committed themselves to remove all real person references from their games following this whole fiasco, and have now removed references from both Overwatch and World of Warcraft as part of that commitment.
