SK Gaming has announced a handful of changes to its current roster ahead of the 2021 League of Legends European Championship Summer Split. Support Erik "Treatz" Wessén will be jungling for the team this summer, and head coach Jesse "Jesiz" Le will be coming out of retirement to play support.
This means that jungler Kristian "TynX" Østergaard will no longer be a LEC starter for SK, and that assistant coach Thomas "Tom" Diakun would be assuming head coach duties in lieu of Jesiz's return to professional play. Tom joined SK Gaming as an analyst at the start of 2020 before becoming the team's assistant coach at the start of 2021.
SK Gaming is the second LEC team to roleswap another one of its starters into the jungle position after Fnatic announced top laner Gabriël "Bwipo" Rau would be swapping to jungle for the Summer Split.
SK Gaming general manager Joe "InnerFlame" Elouassi announced the changes on behalf of the team in a tweeted video, stating that the team would be supporting TynX in helping him find a new organization.
"To be honest, this is not a position we expected to be in," InnerFlame admitted. "Making changes so close to the start of the split is far from ideal, but we felt that these changes were necessary to maintain the progression of our team. The decision actually came collectively from the team, and every single member was on board."
In the 2021 LEC Spring Split, SK Gaming narrowly qualified for the post-season as the 6th seed in the Spring Playoffs. However, after failing to make it past the first round in a 3-1 loss to Fnatic, SK Gaming is looking to shake things up within its current team's configuration to see if it can exceed its previous level.
