What started out as a piece of the real-time strategy game genre that featured humans and aliens from across the solar system back in 1998 has landed on earth in the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
On Thursday afternoon, the Hall of Fame unveiled the Class of 2021 inductees and Blizzard Entertainment's StarCraft was one of four titles selected. Alongside Animal Crossing, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, StarCraft will be immortalized at The Strong museum in Rochester, New York.
"StarCraft added a new twist to the strategy game formula while leading a revolution in multiplayer gaming," says Andrew Borman, digital games curator at The Strong. "It’s regarded as one of the best real-time strategy games of all time and significantly impacted many of the real-time strategy games that have followed in the past two decades."
Blizzard co-founder, Allen Adham, mentioned that the franchise has come quite a long way from its' humble beginnings.
"StarCraft isn't just a real-time strategy game to us now. It's a science-fiction universe, rich with stories, and fill with unlimited possibilities," said Adham.
Since debuting more than two decades ago, the franchise has evolved into numerous titles and expansions that have sold millions of copies around the world. Perhaps its' largest impact was in Korea where the original game turned into a cultural phenomenon and played a massive role in creating the competitive video game circuit into what it is now.
