On April 3rd, DWG KIA faced off against Hanwha Life Esports in the first semifinal match of the 2021 LCK Spring playoffs. DWG KIA managed to take the clean 3-0 victory from HLE, and became the first team to be heading to the grand finals.
Once again, DWG KIA showcased a level of macro and teamfighting that’s far above their competition in the LCK. Despite falling behind in the early game, they managed to keep their losses at a bare minimum, and managed to take the lead through dragon teamfights. Eventually, HLE’s desperate Baron attempt was the opportunity that DWG KIA needed to solidify their lead, and with Kim “yoHan” Yo-han dying to Jang “Ghost” Yong-jun’s ultimate, DWG KIA led the series 1-0.
In HLE’s attempt to bring back momentum, they subbed in Park “Arthur” Mi-reu. With their superstar mid laner, Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon, on Sylas, they had a sizable lead in the early game; Arthur looked quite light on his feet, and Chovy made one play after another. However, DWG KIA started to win one teamfight after another, eventually taking over the game once again. Eventually, they manage to catch out Chovy, take the Baron Nashor, and take game 2 of the series.
Game 3 marked the debut of Senna-Cho’Gath bot lane from DWG KIA, a bot lane duo that was picked in the LEC playoffs. HLE also had a great early game in game 3 as well; wherever Arthur went, he managed to get kills for his laners. However, DWG KIA managed to make a huge pick on Chovy, which led to DWG KIA taking three dragon stacks for themselves. From that point on, BeryL managed to drive out HLE with his engages, eventually leading to Mountain soul for DWG KIA, and the destruction of HLE’s nexus.
