Magic: The Gathering (MTG) will be releasing crossovers with the Lord of the Rings and Warhammer 40K in the near future. 

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Lord of the Rings will be getting a complete dedicated expansion, while we don't yet know the format for the Warhammer 40K crossover. An official announcement for both collaborations is expected at a Hasbro investor event on Thursday.

Both the Lord of the Rings and Warhammer 40K are massive fantasy properties, with the Lord of the Rings being credited with the creation of the modern fantasy genre. MTG has worked with other popular IPs like Godzilla and Rick and Morty in the past to create promotional card-sets.  They have also done a variety of collaborations with Dungeons and Dragons and Transformers, which made sense since Hasbro owns the license to both IPs.

Most recently, WOTC got themselves in hot water over their 2020 Walking Dead secret lair.  Rather than offering alternative art or banning the crossover cards from competitive play — like they have with promotional sets in the past — WOTC released a mechanically unique set of cards in the Walking Dead secret lair which could only be purchased directly through the company as part of a limited run.

While the secret lair ended up being a best-seller for the company, it also sparked outrage from long-time players who saw the release as creating a dangerous precedent for how promotional sets are handled going forward.

In addition to announcing the new fantasy-themed collaborations, Hasbro is also expected to announce a new reorganization of Wizard of the Coasts under the name Wizards & Digital division. The Wizards & Digital division will host all of Wizards of the Coast's properties, including both MTG and DnD, and is expected to focus on expanding their digital content, securing their digital licensing, and creating new games.
