TSM is still finding its identity early on in the 2021 League of Legends Championship Series season, but in week 2 of the Spring Split, the team showcased a previously unseen level of cohesion in its team play. Its first win of the weekend against Golden Guardians was a tad shaky, but its latter pair of victories against Team Liquid and Immortals were the two cleanest games TSM has played all season.
The talent on TSM's roster has never been in doubt, but with five new players joining the roster with little to no previous experience as teammates is never any easy task, especially for a rookie Head Coach. In a post-press conference Q&A session with TSM, which was part of a recent LCS Mini Media Day on February 16, Søren "Bjergsen" Bjerg fielded a question from Inven Global regarding what factors led to TSM's significant improvements shown during its 3-0 week 2.
"Week 1 was really a wake-up call. For both players and staff, I think there were a lot of things that we were not doing well," Bjergsen explained. "There were a lot of things in week 1 that we had practiced successfully, but as soon as we got on stage... I don't want to say we were afraid, but we didn't go into the Spring Split executing the same strategies."
"We have kind of simplified our playstyle and agreed on how these five players are going to have the highest chance of winning when playing together to be able to find our team's identity and playstyle," Bjergsen continued. "Alongside that, we resolved some internal issues we had, and having a reset after week 1 was what really led us to a strong performance in week 2."
With a record of 4-2 in the 2021 LCS Spring Split, TSM is tied for 3rd place with Dignitas and one game back of the 1st place tie between Cloud9 and 100 Thieves. TSM will face off against Evil Geniuses, 100, and DIG in week 3.
