To no one’s surprise, Activision confirmed on an earnings call that they will be releasing a new Call of Duty title in 2021. Since 2005, Activision has published a title in the Call of Duty Franchise every single year. Although the announcement is not a suprise, it is still more than welcome news for fans of the legendary fast-paced shooter franchise.
Not much is known about the development, or developers, behind the new game. Typically Call of Duty titles cycle between three studios: Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games. Treyarch developed the most recent game, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, so the new game is most likely going to be from either Sledgehammer Games or Infinity Ward.
No details have yet been released about the setting of the next installment either. The past few Call of Duty titles have explored World War ll, modern warfare, and the most recently the Cold War. The next game could be set in the future, like Advanced Warfare from 2014. Alternatively, Activision could explore a time period that Call of Duty franchise has yet to examine like World War 1.
Activision Blizzard traditionally announces their Call of Duty games sometime in the summer. So we will likely learn the full details about the new game’s development and setting in the coming months.
