The future of Path of Exile: What’s been announced so far

Guest Reporter

Path of Exile is a free action RPG developed by the New Zealand company Grinding Gear Games. Released in 2013, it’s been viewed as the spiritual successor of Diablo II. The game was well received at the time and has since acquired millions of players and a strong fan base. It has also launched for PS4 and Xbox One, making it a multiplatform game. With the upcoming sequel Path of Exile 2, players are anxiously waiting for new information on future releases of the game. We sum up for you what’s known so far.

Mac version

If you’re a Mac user, here’s some great news! As announced last year, PoE is coming to Mac on September 11. As for the mobile versions announced, there’s no release date announced, either for Android and iOS.

Path of Exile 2

This is definitely the most awaited update for PoE players. It’s not a new game, but it’s much more than just a regular expansion. Grinding Gear took a different approach: allow for both campaigns to be played, combining them into one game. Players will be able to choose whether to play the old or the new campaign for the game since PoE 2 will have the same client so it will work more like an expansion than anything else.

Andy Chalk from PC Gamer reported in November last year about the upcoming changes. It will be a complete overhaul, though you will be able to carry your old stuff. So, for example, your cosmetics or your PoE currency will be safe, which is great! Changes in the core systems include, according to the official Path of Exile website:

  • A new storyline alongside the original campaign (both lead to the same endgame)
  • New skill system
  • New ascendancy classes
  • Engine improvements (particularly in the physics of the game)

The team said a beta version would be available by late 2020, but then the pandemic happened and the beta had to be delayed to 2021. In the meantime, they are focused on working on PoE leagues and delivering them on time, which in turn delays the sequel.

What Can You Do Now?

For now, there’s not much to do other than play the new upcoming expansion and hoping that a beta version will come in early 2021. The team works on a 13-week development cycle, but because Harvest took 14 weeks, you should expect a slight delay for the December expansion, although nothing is confirmed so far. Mac users will be able to play the game already by September 11, which is pretty good news!

Although the PoE 2 beta is now expected only by 2021, this fall will be an exciting time for PoE players, so buckle up for new content coming your way!
