The first champions of the 2020 World of Warcraft Arena World Championship season have been crowned. Method Black, the EU squad of the Method organization, won the EU Cup 1 Grand Finals. Across the Atlantic Ocean, Cloud9 triumphed in the NA Cup 1 Grand Finals.
Method Black's Grand Final was against Wildcard Gaming on Sunday, May 24, and the hard-fought match went seven games before Method Black was able to scrape out a win and claim 1st place in EU Cup 1. Later that day, North American Method squad Method Orange faced off against Cloud9 in an attempt to match its European counterpart's success. However, C9 shut down the Method dream quickly in a convincing 4-1 win to become the NA Cup 1 champion.
The respective victories of Method Black and Cloud9 mark the conclusion of the first week of the 2020 AWC season, which kicked off on Wednesday, May 20 with an open bracket before the main event took place from Friday, May 22 through the weekend.
The schedule for the remaining season will follow the first week for three more weeks, with the final broadcast taking place on Sunday, June 14. The entirety of the 2020 AWC season is being streamed exclusively on YouTube as part of Activision Blizzard's exclusive broadcast dealing with the media platform.
Blizzard has also launched a new Twitter account focusing entirely on World of Warcraft esports for fans to stay up to date on the latest goings-on in the competitive scene. Later on in the year, four teams from each hemisphere will compete for their share of a $500,000 prize pool in the Battle for Azeroth Finals.
