Rocket League Championship Series teams have expressed their worries regarding the lack of communication of the administrative side of the league and the teams themselves. The Esports Observer has acquired a letter sent to Psyonix representing thirteen teams in the league, confirming the complaints.
The letter explains how damaging the lack of disclosure can be, touching on the point of having season schedules and upcoming events reported in advance, so teams can better prepare themselves and properly advertise their teams, maximizing fan acquisition and potentially bringing in sponsors.
Teams that take part in the RLCS are not directly compensated by the league. The only direct revenue forms are team skin sales, sponsorships, and the prize pool, which is divided 90% to the players and 10% to the teams. Team owners have appealed to Psyonix for better communication so they can ensure the stability of their teams in the league.
At the RLCS, teams are responsible for providing players, who own their slots in the league, with the needs of the team, which include every organizational aspect, including roster salaries that can cost up to $40K a month. Team owners are requesting ownership to the teams, “who are the primary caretakers and drivers of player’s health/well-being/growth/financial wherewithal. Ownership of the league spots resting with the teams would allow us to manage player salaries, manage our rosters, and have financial control and ownership over our investment.”
In the letter, teams like eUnited, G2 Esports, Rogue, and Singularity suggest that the communication between them, the publisher, and the league should happen twice a week. Calls would cover marketing and partnership opportunities, updates on the schedule, and content options. Teams have requested to discuss the reliability of in-game item sales, the esports shop, and sales planning with the league officials.
The RLCS has appeared to be in agreement with the request for better communication, however, an official date to address these issues has not been released. More information regarding the upcoming championships will be posted on the official Rocket League Esports website.
