Team Griffin has revealed to be discussing contract termination with its current players. Placing last in the League of Legends Champions Korea 2020 Spring Split with a 5-13 record, the team was relegated from the tournament after being upset by Sandbox Gaming in the lower bracket of the Summer promotion series.
The team announced to be in the process of terminating contracts, with the possibility of exploring other options with players". We will notify any further news through our SNS channels as soon as anything is decided. We are deeply sorry and thankful to the fans who have supported Griffin throughout the years. We will come back as a new Griffin. Thank you”, wrote a representative of the team on Facebook.
Griffin is known to be one of the most dominant teams in the South Korean region, representing the LCK at the League of Legends World Championship last year. Entering the 2020 season after a turbulent end of the year following coaching staff controversy, the team no longer counted with the presence of star players like Top Laner Choi “Doran” Hyeon-joon, Support Son “Lehends” Si-woo. Mid Laner Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon and coach Kim “cvMax” Dae-ho have both moved to DragonX.
Riot Games Korea explained to Inven Global that when a team participates in the league, they write a 'Team Participation Contract'. It specifies what guidelines the league and teams have to follow. In this contract, there's an article that says if the league that the team's affiliated to changes, the players can enter free agency.
“If there is the case of a team being relegated from the LCK to Challengers Korea, or if a team gets promoted from the CK to the LCK, players can declare free agency. The details of the contracts get more strict in the LCK compared to the CK.” said a Riot Games Korea spokesperson.
Inven Global has reached out to Team Griffin for comment, receiving the following message: “The players have returned from their vacations on the 11th. We have just started talking about the matter, so we cannot confirm anything. We will solve this situation through conversation”
If Team Griffin decides to let go of their current roster, players like ADC Park “Viper” Do-hyeon, Mid Laner Son “Ucal” Woo-hyeon, Jungler Lee “Tarzan” Seung-yong and most recently added to the roster, Support player Kim “Wadid” Bae-in, will be free agents coming to the 2020 Summer Season.
