Worlds 2019 has finally arrived, and with it, some of the best players across the globe. Day 1 of Play-Ins featured teams from all five participating continents in LoL Esports. At the conclusion of the day, only one team ended 2-0, the home region representatives, Splyce. While Group A was rife with upsets, Splyce held down Group B and can confidently head into their next scrims and begin prep for the Play-In knockout stage.
While multiple players stood out across the teams, not many stood out in both of their games. Heo "Huni" Seung-hoon looked incredible on Tristana to close out the day, but his Akali in game one was over aggressive and created more problems for Clutch Gaming than it did solutions. Mitchell “Destiny” Shaw’s Nautilus hooks were a large part in the MAMMOTH upset over UoL, but left much to be desired against Clutch.
Tore "Norskeren" Hoel Eilertsen, however, had two incredible performances on Rakan, buffing up his Lover, Kasper “Kobbe” Kobberup, in the bot lane both games. With that, he earns the MVP for the first day of Worlds 2019 Play-Ins.
Norskeren boasted an 80% kill participation in his team’s opening day, acting as both a primary engager and squishy protector in their teamfights. Together, he worked with Kobbe and his jungler, Andrei "Xerxe" Dragomir, to coordinate fights around the bot lane and secure a large lead. From there, he roamed around the map, creating pressure for his team, engaging their mid game skirmishes and ensuring they always walked away with whatever objective they were after.
Though he died a few times in their first game, Norskeren kept his ADC deathless, and Splyce secured the fastest win so far this tournament. In Splyce's second game, Norskeren went deathless himself, boasting an almost 10 KDA combined.
While he has of course showed prowess on other champs before, teams may need to look at splitting up Splyce’s lovers’ bot lane and force Norskeren to adapt and make plays on someone else. Otherwise, expect to continue seeing them utilize his ability to deconstruct his enemies with this Rakan pick.
In general, Splyce looked dominant among the emerging regions’ teams. All players did their part to finish as the sole 2-0 team. Norskeren, however, seemed to be the most integral piece, paving the way for his carries to clean up, and earning the first daily Inven Global MVP for this year’s League of Legends World Championship.
